For IGEN students

Step 1: Attend a Safety Orientation

The safety orientation will take you through a tour of the shop and ensure you understand the rules and responsibilities within the shop. At the end of the orientation, you must successfully complete a safety quiz.

For IGEN 230 Students

The safety orientation, as well as Tool specific training for some machinery in the shop is part of the IGEN 230 curriculum. Trainings will occur during lab times that are a part of your standard time table, as well as on Wednesday afternoons. Make sure you attend your designated lab sections to complete these mandatory trainings.

If you are unable to attend training during IGEN 230, please contact us.

Upper Years

Safety orientations for upper years will be held weekly throughout the year. To register for a safety orientation, please click here.

Step 3: Use the Shop During Open Hours

Come visit us during Shop open hours! Here you are free to work on your projects and ask the supervisor(s) any shop related questions you might have. Don’t forget to scan your card when you enter!

Supervisors will be there to help guide you through the powered equipment you need to use in the Shop. Even if you have learned how to use a tool elsewhere, you will still need an orientation about our specific tool.

For specialized tools such as the waterjet, welders or lathes, check the Training page for more information.

Step 4: Gain After Hours Access

Join us for a community meeting after you complete your training to get after hours card access! Regular attendance (once every months) will ensure your access is maintained. Community meeting times will be posted on the Shop Notion, as well as announced via the IGEN newsletter, IGEN Discord, and in the clubroom.

For External Users (UBC Users Outside of IGEN)

Check back here later. Access for external groups is expected to be set up for mid-late November.

Step 1: Review the Workshop Policies

Please familiarize yourself with the IGEN workshop policies and please keep in mind there are an additional set of rules that apply to external users.
